15th September 2022
The Mining and Energy Union has today lodged a new application with the Fair Work Commission for a ballot of members to withdraw from the Construction Forestry Maritime Mining and Energy Union and form a standalone union.
Since our National Convention unanimously supported pursuing a ballot in March last year, we have faced numerous legal obstacles leading to unfortunate delays.
Our first application was dismissed on technical grounds regarding the date of the amalgamation with the CFMEU. We committed to making a new application for a ballot and we are confident that the application we have submitted today addresses the legal challenges raised.
Central Council has again this week unanimously supported pursuing a ballot and we hope this can occur without further legal interference and delay.
Today’s application is supported by a petition of nearly 3000 members from across our union showing their support for a ballot and thank all those members for their support.
We will keep you informed of the progress of our application.
